Lyrics
Scripture — Isaiah 42:5–6
Thus says God, the Lord,
Who created the heavens
And stretched them out,
Who spread out
The earth and what comes from it
Who gives breath to the people on it
And spirit to those who walk in it.
I am the Lord
I have called you
In righteousness
I will take you
By the hand
And keep you.
Verse 1
I was fighting my way back
When I found these verses
Reading them, I was taken aback
Thinking they were for other persons
Chorus
I am the Lord
I have called you
In righteousness
I will take you
By the hand
And keep you.
Verse 2
And then I opened my heart
For guidance as I pray
To see what meanings impart
To hear what they had to say.
Chorus
I am the Lord
I have called you
In righteousness
I will take you
By the hand
And keep you.
Verse 3
I couldn’t receive the words at first
They must be for someone else
As my selves conversed
My resistance finally melts.
Chorus
I am the Lord
I have called you
In righteousness
I will take you
By the hand
And keep you.
Bridge
I don't know what to achieve
I only know the truth I received
And if He means those words for me
Then all I can do is agree.
Final Chorus
I am the Lord
I have called you
In righteousness
I will take you
By the hand
And keep you.

I Have Called You
Isaiah 42:5–6 begins not with our calling, but with the One who calls: the Lord who “created the heavens,” who “gives breath unto the people,” and who declares, “I the LORD have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee.” Before there is anything to accomplish, there is God—His authority, His purpose, and His keeping.
In its biblical context, this passage speaks of God's chosen Servant and the work God appoints Him to do. We should be careful not to take a promise spoken in that setting and simply declare that every word is individually addressed to us. Yet Scripture repeatedly shows that God does call His people, lead them, equip them, and work through lives surrendered to Him (Romans 8:28; Ephesians 2:10; Philippians 2:13).
The song, I Have Called You, comes from a very personal encounter with that truth. Its struggle is not over ambition or accomplishment. It is over receiving: Could God really have something for me? Could He use this life? The first response is almost disbelief: “They must be for someone else.” That hesitation matters. A genuine calling can feel too large, too intimate, or simply too unlikely to claim easily.
There is humility in not rushing to announce, God told me this. Scripture gives us reason to test what we believe, to seek wisdom, and to discern carefully (1 Thessalonians 5:21; James 1:5; 1 John 4:1). God's Word remains the authority. Our impressions, hopes, and interpretations remain subject to it.
And yet humility does not require perpetual refusal. There can come a point when resistance itself must yield. The bridge of the song reaches that place quietly: there is no grand plan, no list of achievements, only truth received and a willingness to agree.
Calling is deeply personal. For one person it may be visible; for another, almost entirely unseen. It may unfold through ministry, work, family, creativity, service, suffering, encouragement, prayer—or through something that does not yet have a name. We need not manufacture it, compare it, or make it impressive. “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure” (Philippians 2:13).
Perhaps that is why the words “will hold thine hand” and “will keep thee” matter so much. God's work does not begin with a demand that we already know how to accomplish it.
Sometimes the first faithful response is simply:
Lord, if this is where You are leading me, I agree.
Prayer
Lord, You know me completely. You know where I hesitate, where I question, and where I am afraid to believe that You might have something for me to do. Give me wisdom to recognize Your leading and humility to test what I believe against Your Word. Keep me from trying to create a calling for myself or comparing mine with anyone else's. If You are leading me, help me trust Your hand and follow faithfully, one step at a time. And when I do not know what comes next, help me rest in knowing that You do. Amen.
