Lyrics
Verse 1
She stood in the kitchen, washing away
Dish after dish with nothing to say.
Her eyes glossed and glazed anyway
There's so much work to do today.
Chorus
Am I just going through the motions?
Have I lost sight of my devotion?
At this time, I'm sorry, I have no clue.
Have I lost the joy of serving You?
Verse 2
Am I numb to the reason I do?
Is that why I feel like I withdrew?
There's a numbness that follows the years
Where's the joy helping me persevere?
Chorus
Am I just going through the motions?
Have I lost sight of my devotion?
At this time, I'm sorry, I have no clue.
Have I lost the joy of serving You?
Verse 3
But there's that little rumbling I feel
It's easy to forget to sometimes kneel
Forgetting that lack of joy reveals...
I need to wake up to what's real.
Bridge
Lord help me be energized again
Let me pray for joy and say, Amen!!
Let me be present in all that I do
Renew my heart. Let me do it for You
Chorus
I'm not going through the motions
I haven't lost sight of my devotion
For You I do the things that I do,
Father, let me feel joy in serving You.
Outro
Let my hands continue serving
Let my heart remember why
May I experience the yearning
For Your Love that won't pass me by.

When Faithful Hands Need a Renewed Heart
There is a kind of weariness that does not come from doing something wrong. It comes from doing something necessary, faithfully, over and over, until our hands remember the task more readily than our hearts remember its purpose. In the song, The Motions, a woman stands at her kitchen sink, surrounded by work that still needs doing. Her questions are not accusations against service. They are an honest prayer from someone who longs to recover the joy of serving God.
Jesus' words to Martha in Luke 10:38–42 help us understand that tension. Martha's work mattered. Hospitality was an expression of care. Yet Jesus saw that she was “careful and troubled about many things” and drew her attention to what Mary had chosen: being present to Him. The lesson is not that faithful hands should stop serving, but that serving hands must not lose sight of the Lord they serve.
The church at Ephesus offers another searching example. In Revelation 2:2–5, Christ acknowledges their “works, and thy labour, and thy patience”, yet tells them, “thou hast left thy first love.” Their activity had continued, but something essential in their devotion needed attention. Christ did not ask them to pretend the loss was unimportant. He called them to remember and return.
The turning point comes when she recognizes that her missing joy is calling her to pay attention. The song, The Motions, does not treat that feeling as proof that her service has failed. Instead, it becomes a reason to turn again toward the One she serves. Her prayer is simple: “Renew my heart. Let me do it for You.” Romans 12:2 speaks of being “transformed by the renewing of your mind”, while Psalm 51:10 gives us the words, “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.” Both passages direct us to God for renewal. We do not restore our devotion by demanding that we feel differently; we bring our hearts honestly before Him.
And the work itself? It may still be waiting at the sink tomorrow. Colossians 3:23–24 reminds us, “whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord”. Ordinary service becomes an offering when we remember whom we are serving. The closing lines of the song bring Martha's hands and Mary's heart together: hands that continue serving, and a heart that remembers why.
If your days have become a long succession of necessary things, bring that weariness honestly to God. A season without felt joy does not necessarily mean that your devotion is gone. But it can invite you to remember why you began, to become present again, and to ask Him to renew the love with which you serve. The hands may keep doing what they have always done. By His grace, the heart can meet Him there again.
Prayer: Father, You know the work of my hands and the weariness I sometimes carry. When routine clouds my awareness of You, help me recognize it and turn toward You again. Renew my heart, restore the joy of my devotion, and help me be fully present in the ordinary tasks of my day. Let my hands continue serving, and let my heart remember why. In Jesus' name, Amen.
