Lyrics
Verse 1
In the serenity of night,
Wisdom whispers low,
Every heartbeat carries proverbs
We all need to know.
With each step along this journey,
Lessons softly taught...
Bring the echoes of experience,
And in our songs, His wisdom sought
Chorus
Wise sayings like a river,
Flowing deep and wide,
Carving paths through our memory,
Wherein our songs reside.
With the music of the ages,
We’ll send them along,
In the songs of our lives,
His wisdom will live on.
Verse 2
Storms rage below His kingdom,
Only truth is found in Him
Every line reveals His wisdom,
Every lesson shows He's been...
...Threading wisdom with colors,
Weaving a tapestry,
With the textures of our choices,
He weaves our legacy.
Chorus
Wise sayings like a river,
Flowing deep and wide,
Carving paths through our memory,
Wherein our songs reside.
With the music of the ages,
We’ll send them along,
In the songs of our lives,
His wisdom will live on.
Bridge
Every verse is a treasure,
Every chorus a spark,
Guiding us through night,
Illumining the dark.
In the gardens of our minds,
Where wisdom starts to grow,
We’ll share His seeds of truth,
Let their bounty overflow.
Chorus
Wise sayings like a river,
Flowing deep and wide,
Carving paths through our memory,
Wherein our songs reside.
With the music of the ages,
We’ll send them along,
In the songs of our lives,
His wisdom will live on.
Final Chorus
So let us gather stories,
Let His wisdom inside,
In the tapestry of life,
Let His answers provide.
With His echoes in the songs,
And what the Proverbs say...
He’ll weave His strands of wisdom
Into what our lives show today.
Devotional
Wisdom Has a Source
The song, Proverbs, pictures wisdom moving through memory, experience, music, and the choices that eventually become a life. But Scripture makes the first point plain: wisdom does not begin with us. Proverbs says, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge” (Proverbs 1:7), and later, “For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding” (Proverbs 2:6). James likewise tells the one who lacks wisdom to “ask of God” (James 1:5).
Experience can teach us much. Age can give perspective. Stories can preserve what another person learned at great cost. But none of those things outrank the Word of God. They are useful only as they are measured by what God has revealed. That is why the song does not present human sayings as the final authority. It points beyond them. The wisdom worth carrying forward is His.
Wisdom Must Be Lived
Proverbs is not merely a collection of ideas to admire. Its instruction repeatedly moves toward conduct: paths, choices, speech, work, relationships, discipline, justice, humility, and the direction of the heart. Scripture tells us, “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding” (Proverbs 3:5), urges us, “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom” (Proverbs 4:7), and commands, “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life” (Proverbs 4:23).
Jesus makes the same distinction between hearing and doing when He compares the one who hears His sayings and does them to “a wise man, which built his house upon a rock” (Matthew 7:24). Wisdom is shown not simply by knowing what God says, but by building upon it.
The tapestry image in the song, Proverbs, fits that truth well. A life is not woven in one dramatic moment. It is formed strand by strand through ordinary decisions. Over time, those choices reveal what we trusted and whose wisdom we followed.
Wisdom Is Meant to Travel
God's truth is not intended to stop with the person who first receives it. Deuteronomy says, “these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart” and then, “thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children” (Deuteronomy 6:6–7). Psalm 78 speaks of showing God's truth “to the generation to come” so that they might “set their hope in God” (Psalm 78:4, 7).
That gives the river in the song, Proverbs, a deeper meaning. Wisdom moves. It passes through families, churches, teachers, writers, musicians, and ordinary conversations. A truth learned years ago may become the sentence someone else needs today. Legacy, then, is more than being remembered. A biblical legacy is truth faithfully handed onward.
When Wisdom Becomes Song
Music is one way truth can be remembered and carried. Colossians connects the Word of Christ dwelling richly within believers with “teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs” (Colossians 3:16). Psalm 49 joins wisdom and musical expression: “My mouth shall speak of wisdom” and “I will incline mine ear to a parable: I will open my dark saying upon the harp” (Psalm 49:3–4).
That does not make a song Scripture. The distinction matters. The song, Proverbs, can reflect biblical truth, help us remember it, or send us back to it. But the song remains the servant; Scripture remains the authority.
Used rightly, music can carry a biblical idea into memory where it may return hours, days, or years later. A melody can bring a truth back to the surface. A lyric can send someone searching for the passage behind it. In that way, songs can become vessels that carry wisdom farther than the moment in which they were written.
What Are We Passing On?
Every life teaches something. Our words teach. Our habits teach. Our reactions teach. The things we repeat, excuse, treasure, reject, and return to all say something about the wisdom by which we are living.
Proverbs returns us to the foundation: “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding” (Proverbs 9:10). Before asking what we will leave behind, it is worth asking what is shaping us now.
What sayings have become part of your thinking? Which of them came from Scripture, and which merely sound wise because they have been repeated often? What truth from God's Word deserves to be carried more deliberately into the lives around you?
Perhaps that happens through conversation. Perhaps through example. Perhaps through a song. However it travels, let the source remain clear. His wisdom is the treasure. We are simply entrusted with carrying it forward.
A Prayer
Lord, give me wisdom that comes from You. Teach me to measure what I hear, believe, and pass along by Your Word. Shape my choices so that my life reflects Your truth, and help me carry that truth faithfully to others. Let what I say, what I do, and what I leave behind point back to You. Amen.
