Imagine an art installation that at first appears to be a collection of unrelated objects. Then, from one specific vantage point, everything aligns, and the work reveals its intended form.

Now imagine a bridge constructed with the same concept in mind. You cannot enter it from the wrong side or from the middle. Only by arriving at its entrance does it reveal itself as the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

Verse 1

From where I stood it made no sense.

Supports and beams here and there.

Cables reaching in suspense...

Just a puzzle in the air.

Chorus

It wasn't built just now for me...

It was always standing square.

Every piece in perfect order...

Just not seen from over there.

Verse 2

I can’t get here from just any street

The ramp to this one way bridge.

I must arrive at this beginning

To cross on pavement, lightly ridged.

Chorus

It wasn't built just now for me...

It was always standing square.

Every piece in perfect order...

Just not seen from over there.

Verse 3

The grooved pavement hums a song

And the tires gently sing along

Through rain, ice, snow or sleet

The tires grip the ridged concrete

Chorus

It wasn't built just now for me...

It was always standing square.

Every piece in perfect order...

Just not seen from over there.

Bridge

Every bridge I've ever crossed

Was teaching me to see...

The One who spans forever

The chasm between God and me.

His Word gives me confidence

“Keep going..." is all I heard.

The love from Him is so immense

I just take Him at His Word…

Chorus

It wasn't built just now for me...

It was always standing square.

Every piece in perfect order...

Just not seen from over there.

Outro

The Bridge remains behind me,

Yet He's never left my side.

The One who brought me safely over

Still journeys with me... as my Guide.

Not Seen From There

From the wrong angle, a bridge can look almost impossible to understand. Beams cross beams. Cables disappear into a structure we cannot fully see. Supports seem to stand in unrelated places. We may be looking directly at something carefully engineered and still see only “a puzzle in the air.”

Scripture reminds us that our view is limited while God's is not. Proverbs tells us, “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding” (Proverbs 3:5). Isaiah records God's declaration, “my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways” (Isaiah 55:8), and Paul says, “we walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7). None of those passages asks us to pretend that confusing things are clear. They tell us whom to trust when they are not.

What Changes When the View Changes

The chorus of the song, Not Seen From There, contains its central insight: “It wasn't built just now for me... / It was always standing square. / Every piece in perfect order... / Just not seen from over there.” The bridge did not suddenly become sound when the traveler reached the right road. Its structure was already there. What changed was the traveler's position.

That distinction matters spiritually. There are times when we cannot see how God will lead us through what lies ahead. We should be careful not to claim that every painful event, every human choice, or every loss was individually engineered by God as though suffering itself were proof of a hidden blueprint. Scripture does not require us to call evil good or pain easy. It does, however, assure believers that “all things work together for good to them that love God” (Romans 8:28), and that though a person may fall, “he shall not be utterly cast down: for the LORD upholdeth him with his hand” (Psalm 37:24). God is not limited by what limits our vision.

Sometimes understanding comes later. Sometimes only part of it comes. And sometimes this side of eternity we may never be given the vantage point from which all our questions make sense. Faith is not possessing the complete engineering drawing. Faith is trusting the One who does.

The Bridge Scripture Reveals

Then the song changes scale. The ordinary bridge becomes an illustration of something Scripture states plainly: “all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23), and “the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23). We cannot construct our own way across the separation between sinful humanity and a holy God.

Jesus identifies where our trust belongs: “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6). That is where the bridge image becomes especially powerful. Christ was not an emergency solution invented when we finally reached the edge of our need. Scripture says He was “foreordained before the foundation of the world” (1 Peter 1:20), and Ephesians describes God's redemptive purpose in Christ as established “before the foundation of the world” (Ephesians 1:4).

So the line “His Word gives me confidence” is essential. Our confidence does not come from our ability to interpret every cable and beam of circumstance. It comes from what God has revealed. His Word tells us who Christ is, what He has done, and where our trust belongs. The illustration may help us see it, but Scripture establishes the truth.

The One Who Crosses With Us

The outro keeps the song, Not Seen From There, from ending at the far side of the bridge: “The Bridge remains behind me, / Yet He's never left my side.” Christ is more than a means of reaching a destination. Salvation brings us into relationship with Him. Jesus promised, “lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world” (Matthew 28:20). And Proverbs tells us, “In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths” (Proverbs 3:6).

There will still be roads we cannot understand from where we stand. There will be structures that look like tangles until our position changes—and some whose full design we may never see. But the Christian's confidence is not that every mystery will become visible on demand. Our confidence is that we do not have to see the whole bridge in order to trust the One who brings us across.

And when we discover that what looked impossible from over there was already held together, perhaps we learn something for the next crossing: keep going—not because sight has answered every question, but because God's Word has given us Someone trustworthy enough to follow.

Prayer

Father, when what I see makes little sense, keep me from mistaking my limited view for the whole truth. Give me wisdom where You have given me something to understand, patience where understanding must wait, and faith where I cannot yet see how the pieces fit together.

Thank You for Jesus Christ, the One through whom I am reconciled to You. Keep my confidence grounded in Your Word rather than in my ability to explain every circumstance. When the road ahead seems uncertain, direct my steps and teach me to trust Your faithfulness.

And when You bring me across something I once could not understand, help me remember that You did not abandon me on the bridge. Continue to guide me, walk with me, and make my life increasingly faithful to You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
