Lyrics
Verse 1
When I wake up each morning
When I come out to the day
When I know my soul is growing
When I listen, I hear, “Keep Going”
Verse 2
When the Joy is long gone,
And when tired is the word of the day
When I am long past knowing
When I listen, I hear, “Keep on going.”
Chorus
Keep going... One more step in place.
Keep going... He has prepared the race.
Keep going... Roots grow where no one sees.
Keep going... He's changing you and me.
Verse 3
No, you don’t know the way
And your patience is worn away...
No, the journey isn’t slowing
Just listen… He says, “Keep Going”
Verse 4
No, the Answer doesn’t come today
But you Continue anyway.
Just remember, You are not alone
He says,” I’ve got you. Keep on going.”
Chorus
Keep going... One more step in place.
Keep going... He has prepared the race.
Keep going... Roots grow where no one sees.
Keep going... He's changing you and me.
Bridge
You have never walked behind me.
You have always gone before.
Every step I think I'm taking
You have numbered many more
Every road beneath my feet
Was resting in Your hands.
Before I took my first step
You knew where my feet will land,
Final Chorus
Keep going... One more step in place.
Keep going... He has prepared the race.
Keep going... Roots grow where no one sees.
Keep going... He's been growing you and me.
Devotional
The Race Already Set Before Us
There are mornings when continuing feels natural, and others when “tired is the word of the day.” Scripture does not pretend those days do not exist. Hebrews calls us to “run with patience the race that is set before us” while “looking unto Jesus” (Hebrews 12:1–2). The course is not invented one exhausted step at a time. We are called to continue faithfully on the course God has given us.
The song, Keep Going, does not promise that every answer will arrive today. It says something quieter: “No, the Answer doesn’t come today / But you Continue anyway.” Galatians says, “let us not be weary in well doing” (Galatians 6:9), while James teaches that “the trying of your faith worketh patience” (James 1:3). Perseverance is not evidence that nothing is happening. Sometimes perseverance is part of what God is using to grow us.
Roots Grow Where No One Sees
A tree can appear unchanged while an unseen root system is extending beneath the soil. Spiritual growth can be like that. Colossians tells us to walk in Christ, “rooted and built up in him” (Colossians 2:6–7). Philippians gives us confidence that “he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it” (Philippians 1:6).
That makes the chorus especially important: “Roots grow where no one sees.” We often judge growth by what is immediately visible—an answer, a change, a result. God is not restricted to visible progress. His Word can be deepening trust, endurance, humility, obedience, and dependence long before we can point to an outward result.
The One Who Goes Before
The bridge turns perseverance into something more than determination: “You have never walked behind me. / You have always gone before.” Deuteronomy says, “the LORD, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee” and “he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee” (Deuteronomy 31:8). Psalm 139 speaks of God's complete knowledge of us, while Psalm 37 says, “The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD” and, though he fall, “the LORD upholdeth him with his hand” (Psalm 37:23–24).
This does not mean every road is easy or that every choice we make was prescribed by God. It means we never travel beyond His knowledge, presence, or ability to guide. The Christian's confidence is not, I know exactly where this road goes. It is: God knows where I am, He knows what lies ahead, and He has not abandoned me here.
One More Step
Sometimes keep going means a great act of courage. More often it means the next faithful step: pray again, obey what Scripture has already made clear, do today's work, receive today's grace, and leave tomorrow in God's hands. Isaiah promises that “they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength” (Isaiah 40:31). The strength is His provision; the continuing is our response.
The final chorus changes one word that reveals what the journey has been doing all along: “He's been growing you and me.” The road is not merely something to finish. God can use the walking itself to form us.
So when joy is present, keep going. When answers are absent, keep going. When growth is hidden beneath the surface, keep going. Not because persistence saves us, and not because sheer willpower can carry us indefinitely, but because Christ is worthy of our trust and God remains faithful in the next step.
Prayer
Father, when I am tired, impatient, or unable to see what You are doing, help me remain faithful in the step You have given me today. Keep me from measuring Your work only by what I can see. Root me more deeply in Christ, strengthen me through Your Word, and grow in me the endurance I need.
Thank You that You know the road before me and that I do not walk beyond Your presence. When answers do not come today, teach me to trust You without surrendering obedience. Give me grace for one more faithful step, and use even the unseen parts of this journey to make me more like Christ. In Jesus' name, Amen.
