Verse 1

Teach me how to wait without surrendering...

The moments passing through my hands

If today is where You're walking with me

I don't want to miss Your plans.

Chorus

While I'm waiting, let me still be here

Not living somewhere far from now

Open up my eyes to what You've given

Before tomorrow shows me now.

Verse 2

My mind keeps running toward tomorrow

My heart keeps leaving where I stand

Bring me back to this one moment

Hold me gently by the hand.

Chorus

While I'm waiting, let me still be here

Not living somewhere far from now

Open up my eyes to what You've given

Before tomorrow shows me now.

Verse 3

Maybe waiting isn't empty

Maybe silence has a voice

Maybe all this unseen growing

Happens in the present choice.

Bridge

I cannot borrow tomorrow,

Or rewrite yesterday.

Life is breathing in this moment,

Teach my heart to stay.

If Your answer comes in silence,

If it comes another day,

Let me find You in the present...

Not just after I wait.

Chorus

While I'm waiting, let me still be here

Not living somewhere far from now

Open up my eyes to what You've given

Before tomorrow shows me now.

Outro

Don't let waiting... take today away.

Devotional

Do Not Let Tomorrow Take Today

Waiting can become a strange form of absence. We can be physically present in today while our thoughts are already living in tomorrow—wondering when an answer will come, when something will change, or what will happen next. Jesus speaks directly to that temptation: “Take therefore no thought for the morrow” (Matthew 6:34). James likewise reminds us, “ye know not what shall be on the morrow” and teaches us to say, “If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that” (James 4:14–15). Scripture does not forbid wise planning. It challenges the illusion that we can possess tomorrow before God gives it.

The song, Before Tomorrow Shows Me Now, asks for something more difficult than simply waiting: “While I'm waiting, let me still be here.” That is a prayer not to surrender the present while anticipating the future. Psalm 118:24 directs our attention to the present: “This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.” Lamentations joins hope and waiting with God's present mercy and faithfulness (Lamentations 3:22–26). The waiting place is not outside the reach of God.

Waiting Is Not Empty

The song asks, “Maybe waiting isn't empty / Maybe silence has a voice / Maybe all this unseen growing / Happens in the present choice.” Scripture gives good reason to take that possibility seriously. Psalm 27:14 says, “Wait on the LORD: be of good courage”, while Isaiah promises that “they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength” (Isaiah 40:31). Waiting in Scripture is not necessarily inactivity. It can be a season of trust, obedience, endurance, prayer, and formation.

We should be careful, however, not to assume that every silence contains a hidden message we are expected to decode. God's Word remains the authority by which we know His truth. Silence may not give us an explanation. Yet even when an answer has not arrived, we can continue seeking God, obeying what He has already revealed, and receiving the life He has given us today.

Finding God Before the Answer

The deepest turn comes in the bridge: “If Your answer comes in silence, / If it comes another day, / Let me find You in the present... / Not just after I wait.” The goal is no longer merely obtaining the answer. It is refusing to postpone relationship with God until the answer comes.

The psalmist tells his soul, “wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him” and then calls God's people to “trust in him at all times” (Psalm 62:5, 8). Philippians directs anxiety toward prayer and thanksgiving, promising that “the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6–7). These passages do not promise that every uncertainty will immediately disappear. They direct us toward God while uncertainty remains.

God is not only at the destination of the wait. He is present during it. We do not have to reach tomorrow before we can trust Him, seek Him, obey Him, thank Him, or notice His gifts. Today's grace is not merely a placeholder for tomorrow's answer.

The Day in Our Hands

We cannot borrow tomorrow, and we cannot rewrite yesterday. But by God's grace we can live faithfully in the day before us. That may mean planning for tomorrow without moving our heart into it, remembering yesterday without attempting to live there, and waiting for an answer without treating the waiting as wasted life.

The final line leaves us with a simple prayer: “Don't let waiting... take today away.” Tomorrow will arrive when God permits it. Until then, today is where we can love, serve, pray, notice, obey, give thanks, and walk with Him. Waiting is not the space between meaningful moments. It can itself become one of the places where God forms us as we remain faithful to Him.

Prayer

Father, when my mind runs ahead into tomorrow, bring me back to the day You have given me. Teach me to wait without surrendering the moments passing through my hands. Keep me from allowing unanswered questions to make me absent from the people, responsibilities, mercies, and opportunities before me now.

When Your answer does not come today, help me continue to seek You, trust You, and obey what Your Word has already made clear. Use seasons of waiting to deepen my faith and strengthen my dependence upon You. Open my eyes to Your grace in the present, and let me find my peace in You rather than in knowing what happens next.

Do not let waiting take today away. Teach my heart to stay with You here, until tomorrow becomes the day You have given me then. In Jesus' name, Amen.
